Cleaning the Celeris Console
The Celeris console can be cleaned and disinfected using alcohol. Use alcohol wipes to wipe down all surfaces, or alternatively, you can use a spray bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol or ammonia-free Windex. Ethylene oxide (EtO) gas is also an option for disinfection. Avoid using peroxide, as it can tarnish metals over time. If you choose to spray the Celeris, ensure all exposed ports are covered with tape to prevent liquid ingress. For a more thorough cleaning, magnets may be removed from the Celeris surface.
Cleaning the Full-Field Stimulator
To maintain optimal performance, clean full-field electrode-stimulators regularly to prevent hypromellose gel from drying and obscuring light from reaching the eye. For cleaning, we recommend using 70% isopropyl alcohol or ammonia-free Windex. Avoid using peroxide, as it can tarnish the metal. Annual calibration is also advisable.
Cleaning Technique
Clean the Celeris stimulators at the end of every recording session. It is not necessary to clean them between each animal. Dried conductive gel becomes opaque which obscures light from reaching the retina. The gel is water soluble, you can run the tips under warm water to dissolve it. The stimulators can also be cleaned using alcohol wipes, kimwipes, or moistened cotton-tipped applicators. However, you should not use peroxide as it will tarnish the metal.
Below, you can see the difference between a clean and obscured stimulator tip. To examine the stimulators, look closely or use a magnifying glass or camera to visualize the condition of the stimulator.
Caution First Generation Stimulators
First generation stimulator-electrodes are designed with a wrap-around metal electrode that is susceptible to bending. When cleaning these electrodes, avoid pinching and twisting the metal tip, as this can bend the metal and increase the likelihood of corneal abrasions.
Pattern Stimulator Cleaning
Clean the pattern stimulator in between recording sessions. The pattern stimulator does not require calibration, but Diagnosys offers a sonicating cleaning service to remove all leftover particulates.
Cleaning Technique
The eye piece of the pattern stimulator is very delicate! To clean, place the tip of the stimulator under warm running water to start dissolving the hypromellose gel. Use an alcohol wipe, Kimwipe, or moistened cotton-tipped applicator in a gentle twisting motion to remove remaining gel. Do not use excessive force or scrubbing technique.
